It is during the difficult times of life that we often feel the most alone; these are the times when we need our friends the most. If you have a friend who is going through a tough spell, you can show your caring through your supportive presence and through poetry.
This poem reminds me of a time when a close friend of mine was going through a divorce. Between the stress of courtroom proceedings and some problems at work, she was really getting down - she felt like everything was going wrong at once, and she did not know where to turn.
All of us made an extra effort to spend time with her and plan activities that would help to take her mind off things for a while. One day, over coffee, I gave my friend a handwritten version of this poem; for the first time in weeks, I actually saw her smile.
Fortunately, she is now remarried and really enjoying life, but she has never forgotten how her good friends were there for her through the hard times.
