Awesome Friend
You're leaving and I'm just so bummed,
And I know you are too,
I don't know what school will be like,
For me, there, without you.
You're such an awesome friend to me,
We make a perfect team,
I hope it won't be quite as bad
And lonely as it seems.
Keep in touch, from your new town,
And from your new high school,
I want to hear all about it,
I am sure that it will rule!

When you're a kid, one of the hardest things is that you don't really have much say about where you are living. If your parents decide to move, then you don't have any choice, no matter how badly you want to stay with the friends you have known forever.
When I was a teenager, my dad got a job in another state, and we all had to move. I was really depressed, because I did not want to leave my friends and my old school, where I already knew how to fit in. The really great thing was that a bunch of my friends got together and threw a huge party right before we left.
My best friend since we were kids was really bummed out - she was a little shy, and she was sure she would have no one to talk to. Fortunately, she did start making more friends after I left, but I know it wasn't easy for her.
Just as my family was leaving, she ran up and gave me a poem a lot like this one - she had worked on it all night as a going-away present. I loved having something she wrote just for me, and it made both of us feel better to know we would stay in touch forever.
